Slumdog & MoD Pay

Earlier this evening I watched the film Slumdog Millionaire which I found to be excellent, although I found the emphasis to be quite different from the book on which it is based. I am not going to give you a review on the film but you can find a a good one here.

I read the book when it first came out in paperback. I really enjoyed it and loved the premise, which certainly did come across in the film. The ending though is quite different from the book, which incidentally was originally called Q&A and written by Vikas Swarup. I might do a review of the book for you when I can find my copy...

I came back to some good news in my mail box - the MoD pay ballot results. PCS members have voted against accepting the divisive pay offer. The offer means that some of the lowest paid members would receive a cut in their earning potential whilst other members would receive as much as a 17% pay rise.

How could they possibly justify such an offer?

Uber - The only thing I can think of is that they were trying to divide the workers. But that clearly didn't work...

Sally - I loved the film, but I think I liked the story line of the book even more :-)

Do you buy mainly online or do you visit bookshops?

James - I usually try to get my books from I book shop. I love browsing through books but most of my book groups reads seem not to be in stock so I have to order them either at the shop or online. If I do it online they arrive more quickly.

It's a great film but certainly not a feelgood film as it was marketed.

JPT - I agree it is not a feel good film at all!

The book although it had the same premise of knowing the answers to questions because of his life events had a completely different feeling.

The continued love interest that was portrayed in the film wasn't there (although there was a love interest).

The religious fighting where his mother died wasn't there.

The ending was totally different and in my opinion the way the book ended after the awful life experiences did give a feel good factor, which got lost in the film.

I loved the film too.
Re the ballot, times are hard right now. I know you will do your best to negotiate the best deal for all.

Ellee - The members would have accepted the pay if it had been equal. But the low paid workers were in some cases getting a pay cut whilst the higher paid were getting as much as 15% pay rise.

That was the problem, if it had been low and equal we would have voted against it...

Sorry that should have said we wouldn't have voted against it, it would have been accepted.
