If it is still causing you problems then here is what I have tried with mine. First I give it a good kick. But not so hard that it flies across the room (yes I learned that the hard way. Doesn't half stub your toe).

Then you need to get a new HD.

After that I have a go at pulling out all the coloured wires and seeing which does what. If I still can't figure it out then I take it back to the shop and tell them it's faulty.

Once I have it home again I rip out the fans and things as they make so much noise. The PC for some reason has to go back to the shop as it burns out and I cannot guess why.

Once the PC is returned to me it then works perfectly.

Oh I believe you Cherie, with the problems I had two weeks ago, now am wild about the new system I have. Mine was so old, when the hard drive got wiped, they told me the capacitors are on their way out and then it will be gone forever. Thank goodness for new ones lol, hope it all gets sorted for you :)

Andi - I don't think any surge took place. It was an intermittent fault which chose to be a permanent one :-/

Dragonstar - It was shiny, that was the day it was built ;-)

Deb - My assessment was the front fan. I have forgotten how to get into the front bit of my PC box to check :-/ I think it is the dust from decorating!

My brother built my PC and I loaded all the software so I know that I haven't been stitched up ;-) It is just some sort of hardware glitch!

I got squealing spider noises from one of my laptops until I took it apart and cleaned up the fan and soused it with WD40. Then I noticed that the manufacturer had slapped plastic film on top of the fan vents, completely covering them. Duh, or what.

That's an incredibly shiny and dust-free computer!...

Power supply has probably failed. If you're lucky it will be a simple job to replace it.

If you're unlucky it will have failed because of a surge and taken one or more of your RAM, processor, motherboard and hard disk with it...
