PhotoHunt - Nautical

I am sure you will all recognise the 'White Cliffs of Dover', you can also view Calais in this previous post of mine.

A Little Bit Choppy

Nearly There

Dover Beach

The sea is calm to-night.
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits; on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand;
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night-air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.

Sophocles long ago
Heard it on the A gaean, and it brought
Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow
Of human misery; we
Find also in the sound a thought,
Hearing it by this distant northern sea.

The Sea of Faith
Was once, too, at the full, and round earth's shore
Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled.
But now I only hear
Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,
Retreating, to the breath
Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear
And naked shingles of the world.

Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! for the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams,
So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,
Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night.

With that choppy gray water I was thinking polar ice caps or glacier anyway.

The first picture looks like a big wall of waves. Had to look close to see it was the famous white cliffs. Great shots.

Great shots... I wouldn't have known the white cliffs of Dover...so glad you pointed that out.. Loved this!

I had always heard of the cliffs and they are white. The water looks kind of rough in the first photo...I wouldn't want to be on a boat riding over those waves.

Here is mine:
JyLnC's photohunt.

Nice shots Cherie. I used to work in Dover. I'm glad to say that those days are long over! Happy weekend

I love the first one - the sea looks so much like sea!

Both photos indicate that you are leaving rather than arriving, whilst you are going forward it suggests to me that you are trying to preserve memories left behind.

Jenny - I hope you get the chance :-)

Alice - They do look a bit like that don't they?

Vita - Happy Valentine to you too xx

Tokenhippygirl - Thank You :-)

Terri - It was quite choppy!

PowersTwinB - I hope you found them interesting.

JMB - Thank You :-)

ancient one - Glad you enjoyed them.

JyLnC - It was quite rough, but the ferry used it's stabilisers.

Jams - I don't think I would fancy working in Dover!!!

Dragonstar - I was quite pleased with the effect of the sea.

JHL - The ferry was arriving in Dover so in that respect I was arriving. But yes I had memories from my weekend away with family and friends, which was fun :-)

There was a cold looking Northerly blowing, I believe.

It has always rankled that I have no pics of really rough weather, always too busy or short of film.

"The ferry was arriving in Dover so in that respect I was arriving". You may have taken a photo arriving at Dover, but unless the ferry is going backwards it's a departure and not an arrival. Both photos show the rear of the ferry and not the front.

Welshcakes - I always find that a lovely site.

Aileni - Well if you are in charge of the vessel, no time for photos!

JHL - You have just made me double check. I have a series of photographs that span from the ferry leaving Calais, turning round in the Channel and then arriving at Dover. It is definitely the front (bow) of the boat. I even double checked with someone who confirms it is the front of the boat because the P&O pennant is flying. The rear (stern) of a P&O ferry flies the red ensign.

Cherrypie: I sit corrected, at my computer, and for the second time in as many weeks, a blogger has said I am wrong. I repeat what I told him, there's a first time for everything:-)

JHL - I think we all get things wrong from time to time.

It only becomes a problem if the person pretends they haven't made a mistake.

Neither you or I are guilty of that charge! :-)
