Armistice Day 2008

Today marks the 90th anniversary of the end of the first world war.

These photographs and video were taken two years ago today after attending the remembrance ceremony at Menin Gate. They show Tyne Cot which is the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world. Nearly 12,000 service men are buried there and the memorial bears the names of over 35,000 British and New Zealand soldiers who died in Ypres Salient after mid-August 1917 whose graves are not known.

Tyne Cot

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

It's impossible to imagine so many lives being lost. And so very tragic.
