The Lion Mound

Both Ginro and Gallimaufry figured out where I was standing and Liz was thinking along the right lines.

I was on top of the Lion Mound from which you can view the entire battlefield that was the site of Napoleon's last battle. Perched on top of the mound is a cast iron lion which symbolizes the victory. It "announces the peace that Europe won in the fields of Waterloo”.

I also went in the panorama which is a circular building with paintings reenacting the battle. The sound effects that accompany it, are really quite convincing and it transports you back in time...

James - We have a coach trip every year to the continent. As it is a private group, the tours a planned to suit us. We get to do and see all sorts of interesting things.

Dragontstar - There were 226!!! My legs were like jelly when I got to the top.

According to Richard Holmes, the surrounding countryside wasn't as flat at the time of the Battle as appears now because the Lion Mound was constructed with locally sourced materials.

Gallimaufry - It was so high it would certainly have taken up a lot of those.
