The quadrangle in front of Coughton court is planted with a colourful array of flowers which are a delight to behold. In addition to this courtyard garden, there is also a walled garden which features a rose labyrinth.
The house has been lived in and owned by the Throckmorton family for nearly six centuries.
The name Coughton (pronounced "Coat-un") suggests a settlement or farm known for the hunting of woodcock or game birds. It is believed that there was a medieval house on the site when John de Throckmorton arrived in 1409 to marry into the de Spiney family. The Tudor gatehouse in the centre of the present house was constructed around 1530 with Elizabethan half timbering added to the courtyard wings. The house has remained relatively unchanged since. Clare McLaren-Throckmorton inherited the property in 1989, and lives in the North Wing. Clare still manages the gardens and grounds and runs the Plant Centre. The National Trust currently manages the house, restaurant and shop and will do so for a further 13 years.

Quivering with colour.
What a beautiful, warm looking place. It must be a joy to visit. The quadrangle looks full of sun and colour.

An Arkie's Musings
Those gardens are indeed lovely! As you might see if you visit my blog, I shortened the word quadrangle to quad, ala student custom. Thank you for the history of this interesting house.
And another spot to add to my list! lol :)
Great post!
gorgeous post!!
What lovely flowers in the quadrangle. Yellow is my favourite colour. I invite you to come take a ride on my quad into the Powell River, BC, back country. - Margy
Beautiful! We are brown, brown here (not even white yet) so this is a treat... Thanks!
Ben there several times...
I like the way you have two Georgian churches side by side- A catholic one for the Throckmorton family, and a Proterstant one built BY the Throckmorton's for the Parish.
Oh my! Great Choice! I love the structure lovely castle! Amazing Quadrangle.
By the way, maybe you would like to join my bloggy anniversary giveaway :)

Another beautiful garden Cherie. Are there any left which you haven't yet explored.
Does anyone not particularly like Tudor architecture or is it just me?
I love any old or ancient architecture. There's something about the fact that it's still here, and still beautiful and useful long after the builders and original owners have passed on that appeals to me.
Beautiful pictures! Thank you for taking part in ABC Wednesday this week! Hope to see you next time, too. :)

Richie, Archie, Digital P and Chrissy - Thank you :-)
Leslie - I shall have to show you round one or two.
Powell and SLW - Thank You.
Crushed - I find it a quite fascinating place and has an interesting history.
Earthlingorgeous - I shall check it out later.
Bear - I am late too!
Ellee - There are quite a few I haven't managed to visit yet.
James - I rather like the middle bit of the house that looks like a castle. It has a high tower and the first time I went there was in the middle of a thunderstorm.
Jay - I also like the fact that it is still lived in and cared for by it's owners too.
I love that red brick. My dream is to have an old redbrick walled rose garden. Which is impossible for any number of reasons!!
Very pretty.
Thank you from the ABC Wed. Team for posting your Q photos this week.
Chrissy - Thank You :-)
Q is for quietude.
Sean - And solitude :-)
Thank you for sharing family history. My great grandmother was Rebecca Throckmorton Needels.
