Pastime With Good Company

Tonight I am going out for a meal with friends, so I thought I would leave you with an appropriate song (although not if you look into the words too closely).

When I sang in a choir this is one of the songs we sang, and it was always great fun. It has taken me a while to find a You Tube version that sounds anything like the way we performed it. But this version is very close except we didn't sing the descant part.

It is the first of two songs on this video, the second one would have been more appropriate for Christmas.

Pastime with good company
I love and shall unto I die.
Grudge whoso will, but none deny,
So God be pleased, this live will I.
For my pastance
Hunt, sing, and dance.
My heart is set
All goodly sport
To my comfort.
Who shall me let?

Youth will have needs dalliance,
Of good or ill some pastance.
Company me thinketh then best
All thoftes and fantasies to digest.
For idleness
Is chief mistress
Of vices all.
Than who can say
But "pass the day"
Is best of all?

Company with honesty
Is virtue, and vice to flee.
Company is good or ill
But every man hath his free will.
The best ensue,
The worst eschew,
My mind shall be.
Virtue to use,
Vice to refuse,
I shall use me.

Wonderful! I honestly did not know it was a song. I had only seen Pastime in good company as the title of one of Sue Darroch's blogs!

He wrote some very singable songs, didn't he? I liked the way that sounded.
