Vote on 42 Days Detention...

...Narrowly won!

BBC News reports that the Government narrowly won the House of Commons vote on extending the maximum time police can hold terror suspects to 42 days. The vote was won by a mere 9 votes:
"Prime Minister Gordon Brown has narrowly won a House of Commons vote on extending the maximum time police can hold terror suspects to 42 days.

Thirty-six Labour MPs joined forces with Conservatives and Lib Dems to vote against the proposals.

But that was not enough to defeat them - although the government still faces a battle in the House of Lords.

The 42-day proposal was passed by 315 MPs to 306 - with votes by the nine DUP MPs proving crucial."
John McDonnell MP reports about how Gordon Brown offered political bribes in order to gain votes in favor:
"Throughout the last few days Gordon Brown has contacted Labour MPs and offered all sorts of blandishments and political bribes in return for their votes for 42 days. I am pleased that so many have stood firm on principle and have rejected this combination of threats, groveling pleas for support and outright political bribery. However we heard today reported in the media that those MPs representing the Compass group are supporting the Government on 42 days. This will undermine the vote opposing 42 days. Ominously they voted for the Government throughout last night on the proposals to to scrap coroners' juries and on toughening control orders."
Day by day we see our civil liberties slowly but surely slipping away. Lets hope this doesn't get passed in the House of Lords.

PS: I was going to post something nice today, but this annoyed me and it sort of follows on from yesterday's post... Tomorrow is another day ;-)

Would the government have fallen if it had not passed? A very strange business since so many were speaking against it, I mean bigwigs in the know.

Next book for my group is a Canadian book so you will not have heard of it. Mary Lawson (who also wrote Crow Lake which did do well internationally) wrote it, The Other Side of the Bridge.

So what is your book group choice that you are struggling with? Is it a time factor or????

jmb - Our Prime Minister (Gordon Brown) stood to fall if it wasn't passed. Hence all the political bribes he was handing out!

My book was Day by A L Kennedy. I struggled to get past the first few pages. But really is was a time factor (conference and that slide show then a few days away) that didn't allow me to sit down long enough just to get going with it.

I thought Compass were meant to be a left-of-centre campaigning group. Just lobby fodder now . Lost credibility.

Calum - I thought that too, they were supposed to be fighting for the traditional labour values! I can see why John is so annoyed...
