Walking in the Air

I have always enjoyed the short film 'The Snowman'. It is so lovely and magical and it reminds me of the innocence of childhood. The voice of Peter Auty a Choirboy from St Paul's Cathedral Choir singing 'Walking in the Air' seemed to pull the story together and lingers in your head, long after you have finished watching. The song was later made popular by Aled Jones.

I know it has the same effect on other people too. One of my friends at work could never stop herself from suddenly singing the song (an octave too high and a bit warbley), making everyone else clap their hands over their ears. We always used to joke with her, that she was singing the solo in the Christmas Carol service that used to be an annual event in our office.

I find it quite heartwarming that Aled Jones and Terry Wogan have teamed up to make this song for children in need. Especially as today I found out that one of our children's charities is struggling due to the economic climate.

And then this image that my lovely friend Dani posted today made me sit back an think that despite the things that are happening to our country, there are worse places to be...

Christmas is nearing..., originally uploaded by CasallArt.

AMENDMENT: I have amended the post to give proper credit to the chorister who sang this song in the film. Thanks to JHL and Anon.

I was about seven or eight when I first saw it.
I agree, the song is quite powerful. Timeless classic.

The only problem is, Aled didn't sing the song in the film - it was Peter Auty. Aled made a version 2 or 3 years later which went into the charts, that is why his version is so well known. Sorry to disillusion you!

You can find the Aled version on YouTube if you search but this is not it.

anon is right

The film's one song, "Walking in the Air," was written specially for it and performed by a St Paul's Cathedral choirboy, Peter Auty.

Whichever, still a song I enjoy and I have it on one of my Xmas Songs CDs.

Crushed - Yes, it is a timeless classic isn't it?

Anonymous - Thanks, I have amended the post so it now gives the proper credit to the person who sang the song. Either I am to young to remember that or I was having a senior moment ;-)

JHL - Thanks, I agree it is a wonderful song whoever sings it :-)
