The answer is:
Chesters Fort which is the best preserved example of a Roman cavalry fort in Britain. It is one of many troop bases along Hadrian's Wall and was added soon after the wall was built (AD122-23).
This is a photograph of the bathhouse taken with my back to the river, just behind me on the other side of the river a small portion of Hadrian's Wall can be seen. There were various bits of stone in the river itself which must have formed part of the bridge over the river.

That is really interesting! Living where I do, we see nothing so old. Maybe hundreds of years old, but not thousands!
I should have thought of that clever way to hide the answers on my blog. Must remember that!
Fascinating...as is your ability to make text appear and disappear :-)
Very cool feature you have there with the highlighting of the text! :)
Wonderful shot. I'll bet in their time they were beautiful!
Happy Hunting. Mine is up here.
Wonderful shot.
Amazing...the only old stuff I see is when I look in the mirror.
What a pleasure for my eyes. :)
Beautiful! I used to visit a lot of prehistoric and Roman sites - I remember claiming that history stopped with the Romans! - and you've brought back some great memories. Thank you.
Meri has been there but I haven't though I think I've seen pictures because it looked familiar.
cool...but I want to know how to make my text do that to...
Very nice photo for today. I had no idea what it was.
Cool pic. I'm sure most would say old ruins but few would have guessed bathhouse. Good technique on hiding the answer.
Whaaa, no highlight text for me. It doesn't show.
Gosh, amazing.
I noticed there was a programme on television tonight about Hadrian.
It looked like Roman conqueror type of stuff. So far I am doing pretty well with my guesses.
I could imagine walking and looking at these ruins, lovely Cherie :-)
lovely shot! i love ruins...
Thanks everyone I am glad it brought back memories for some of you :-)
Wow, that’s a nice place, Cherie! And that ‘invisible ink text’ was cool… I’ve never seen that before…! Ingenious :-)
I guessed Hadrian's Wall but didn't know which part. Beautiful pic.
Eve - It was a very interesting place. Thank you :-)
Welshcakes - I caught it on a lovely sunny day!
