I am currently reading this book, which is written by David Craig. It explains how the government has squandered our money to a tune of £50,000 per family. The book is quite fascinating, but not a recommended bedtime read or for anyone with high blood pressure!
It has the following to say about Public Finance Initiatives (PFI):
It has the following to say about Public Finance Initiatives (PFI):
“However the greatest benefit of PFI is that it enables ministers to announce magnificent ‘investments’ without immediately having to land us taxpayers with a huge and possibly indigestible bill for the corresponding massive costs. Moreover, the Byzantine complexity of PFI means that it remains largely incomprehensible to most taxpayers, to journalists looking for more interesting,, ‘easier’ stories and to the majority of Members of Parliament. It thus escapes scrutiny, except by a few rabid PFI-phobics whom nobody listens to anyway."Afternote: Today in the last Prime Ministers Question Time before the parliamentary recess local MP Mark Pritchard challenged Gordon Brown to admit the Government made a mistake in awarding the Defence Training Review (DTR) contract, a PFI deal, to Metrix rather than to RAF Cosford.

I believe Private Eye did a long pull-out special on PFI some time ago - maybe one of your friends can get hold of a copy?
Only need to check Wat Tyler to see that, Cherie. Yes, it is a crime indeed.
Gordon Brown! The words fill me with dismay!
This Government...or rather lack of it drive me to despair Cherrypie.
I know of many commited Socialists that are promising to vote em out next time. They're a disgrace.
Arrogant and ignorant comes to mind !
Di.
I must get this book, it looks like required reading. However, I will no doubt have to take in small doses for my own sanity.
Sackerson - I think I may have seen it. My friends do let me know ;-)
James - Maybe this.
D - Me too xx
Trubes - Love your last line. They are not socialist, not even left of centre!
DR - Yes only in small doses!!!
Interesting - but I don't think I'll read this book at night, either!
Good choice Welshcakes ;-) xx
He's only wasting £1 trillion? I could have sworn it was more than that...
The point remains the same Andi ;-)
Difficult to comment on this from my perspective over here. I have taken less and lss interest in British politics since the Blurr got in. Goverments are about wasting money, they all are because there are so many wizzkids with ideas flanneling MPs who are in general, poorly educated. The over-educated flumouxing the under-educated.
Ach what to say. it's trebles all round when a PFI contract is won. As for IT..... that's in a league of its own!
Aileni - I often wish I could ignore them too! I love your description of Governments, you put it so well.
Jams - Yes and they wrap it up as saving money and providing better services, what they really mean is transferring accountability.
Last Christmas one of my books was by David Craig and Richard Brooks of Private Eye: "Plundering the Public Sector - How New Labour is letting consultants run off with £70 billion of our money."
It's been too heavy for me to delve into yet - along with many other books.
Calum - I also have a lot of books lined up for reading. I also got Plundering the Public Sector after the current on I am reading. The former is supposed to be the better of the two.
I will let you know when I have read them both, but I think I need an easier read before going onto that one!
